Maison Mihara Yasuhiro’s Spring 2025 Menswear Review
Maison Mihara Yasuhiro's Paris Fashion Week show included a nostalgic and playful take on American classic staples such as jeans, flannels, bomber jacks, and sweats. However, the show wasn’t just about the clothing. Classic American hits like Sweet Caroline, Lovely Day, and Can’t Help My Self were performed by a couple of audience members for entertainment. The karaoke performances excited the audience and further added to the fun and playful theme pushed by Yasuhiro’s designs.
The looks, however classic, had distressed or completely torn hems, colorful stickers, childlike accessories, and unconventional styles. Many pieces of clothing were overlayed, which in the case of looks 21 and 29 were layers of denim jeans and shorts. A common aspect of the show was layered denim, whether in jackets or pants.
The 20th look displayed stacked collared shirts designed to replicate the jean jackets seen throughout the show. It was paired with another collared shirt underneath, all cut to the same length with a slight fringe at the bottom. Several factors contribute to the nostalgic feel of this look, including colorful stickers decorating the denim pants. Additionally, the accessorized little animal on the end of a lanyard held by the model and the trendy technique of using shoelaces in place of a belt also evoke nostalgia and childlike tones.
The show explores an abundance of different silhouettes, patterns, and layered fabrics. A variety of patterns are showcased in looks like the 22nd, where stripes and flannels are combined, and the 27th, where stripes and lizard print are worn simultaneously. These unusual combinations remind the audience of the carefree approach to dressing themselves as children, without concern for clashing patterns, colors, or fabrics.
The fourth look of the show included a cropped bomber jacket and flannel shirt worn above a sweat jacket. The layered pieces cut off right above the waistline making for a nice fit. The look also includes a similar miniature animal-shaped bag that adds childlike tones to Yasuhiro’s intended theme.
Although the show might seem simplistic compared to others during this Paris Fashion Week, the mixture of common plaid stripes and denim makes this collection fun and wearable for all. The unconventional cuts and styling make it appear as a child playing dress up or learning to express themselves through fashion. And while fashion is a valuable art form, the inclusion of ordinary people performing karaoke and along with classic pieces shows common people outside of the world of fashion they can express themselves however they please.
